St. marianne coPe PariSH
St. Marianne Cope Parish comprises the churches of St. Joseph in Rush and Good Shepherd and Guardian Angels in Henrietta.
The three worship sites have a long history of serving the Catholic community in Henrietta
and Rush.
In the 1860s, Catholics in Rush would occasionally attend Mass in the homes of prominent Catholic families if a priest from a nearby village traveled by horseback or horse and buggy to celebrate Mass. When an extension to the local railroad was built in the early 1860s, more Catholic families moved to the area. Father Joseph O’Donohue of Scottsville found a home in Rush for $500, and the home was remodeled into St. Joseph Church and dedicated in 1864. Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid laid the cornerstone for the new church on July 17, 1881 in a ceremony that drew 2,000 people, the largest gathering ever seen at that time in the town of Rush.
During the pastorate of Father Martin Cluney, an enlarged Victorian Gothic church was built in 1902- 03. St. Joseph Church was most recently renovated in 1987-88.
