Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid established Rochester’s Blessed Sacrament Church – the 19th church in the Diocese of Rochester – in 1901 to serve German
and Irish families living in the area at that time.
TThe original two-story church was dedicated on April 13, 1902, and demolished three decades later to create more parking. The cornerstone for the current church at 534 Oxford Street was laid on Sept. 19, 1911, and dedicated by Bishop Thomas
F. Hickey.
Father Thomas F. Connors was Blessed Sacrament’s pastor from the parish’s founding in 1901 until 1963.
The parish has evolved from serving Catholic families in the immediate neighborhood to attracting
parishioners who travel from all areas of the diocese. During its rst 100 years, Blessed Sacrament celebrated more than 20,000 weddings, baptisms and funerals.
In 2006, Blessed Sacrament joined a partnership with nearby St. Boniface and St. Mary’s churches in Rochester, and in 2015, the Southeast Catholic Community was created to embrace all three worship sites.
