Blessed Sacrament Parish, combining the worship sites of Ss. Peter & Paul and St. Patrick’s, serves as the home base for Catholics in eastern and central Elmira.

By Ss. Peter & Paul is the oldest of all Elmira Catholic churches, having been founded in 1848 at the corner of Market and High streets. Its founding pastor was Father John Sheridan. The parish’s rst two churches were small – one made of brick followed one of wood. The current church was dedicated in 1857 by Buffalo Bishop John Timon. That structure – described in a 1993 Catholic Courier article as “a building of nostalgic beauty” – has successfully recovered from damaging oods in 1946 and 1972. Ss. Peter & Paul is anked by St. Joseph’s Hospital and Blessed Sacrament’s parish center, which opened in 2004 and is home to the Elmira
Community Kitchen.
