Holy family catHolic community
Holy Family Catholic Community is made up of three Steuben County churches – Sacred Heart, Perkinsville; St. Pius V, Cohocton; and St. Joseph’s, Wayland – as well as St. Mary in Dansville, Livingston County.
Sacred Heart, founded in 1838, is the oldest faith community in the Rochester Diocese outside of Monroe County. Early Masses were celebrated in a log-cabin church until a new facility opened in 1850 under the guidance of Redemptorist priests serving the area. The current church opened in 1884, with Buffalo’s Bishop Stephen V. Ryan presiding at
the dedication.
Sacred Heart
The second of the current Holy Family worship sites to be established was St. Mary in Dansville. Under the direction of Redemptorist Father Benedict Bayer, the parish’s rst church opened in 1845. Seventy years later, the current St. Mary Church was dedicated by Rochester Bishop Thomas F. Hickey.
