Faculty News Purim at the Faculty:
Happiness and Success
CELEBRATING This Purim, the faculty hosted a fun day for the
children and grandchildren of the academic faculty and administrative
staff. We kicked off the morning with drums and percussion
instruments, went on to enjoy a sweet chocolate workshop, and
then turned to science, printing noisemakers on a 3D printer and
demonstrated the movement of robots to show the children what we
do in the faculty. We ended the day at the mechanical engineering
cinema, with a movie and popcorn until we burst!
The Revolutionary Heat Engine That Will Transform the Energy World
DRIVING FORCES Assoc. Prof. Carmel Rothschild from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering partnered with his friend
Doron Tamir to establish Luminescent, a company that developed an innovative heat engine that uses waste heat and is about
to revolutionize the energy world. Most of the world’s energy is currently generated from heat engines: heat is generated from
gas, coal or a nuclear reaction, then converted into electricity. The problem is that most of this heat is emitted and wasted.
The engine developed by Rothschild and Tamir takes in the heat emitted from other engines with high efficiency and converts
it into electricity. Luminescent has already raised seven million dollars (in a seed round) from venture capital funds, and
intends to later use this technology to develop a solution for storing renewable energy as well.
Tremendously Successful Conference on Propulsion Technologies
for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Has Become an International Event
DRIVING FORCES In February, the Faculty of Mechanical this year the conference attracted around 200 engineers
Engineering held the 10th Conference on Propulsion and scientists from Israel, India and Austria, including
Technologies for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, led by Assoc. academics, representatives of the IDF and government
Prof. Leonid Tartakovsky. The conference, which was organizations, and high-ranking officials in the field’s leading
established as a small-scale local event in 2012, has gained industries. The keynote lecture was given by Avinash Kumar
momentum over the years: Today it is globally recognized as Agarwal from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
a very high-level event for drone propulsion and serves as a (IIT Kanpur), who was recognized by Stanford University as
major stage for presenting new developments in the field and India’s leading energy researcher. Like those preceding it, the
as a networking space for those who work in it. Accordingly, conference included an exhibition and poster competition.
