little, and I do not mean to add to God’s Word, but I just sort of read it
this way. As the heavens are ten billion times, ten billion times, ten
billion times higher than the earth, so great is Thy loving kindness
towards those who fear Him. You say, what a strong figure! No, what a
weak picture. Because the reality has to be infinitely greater than that.
Multiply that times eternity. Pull out the stops and believe that with all
your heart. We sort of read these things la, la, la.
God is trying to give us a passing glimpse of His heart. You say, how
much does God love me? Think about that when you start to doubt
God’s love, and wonder where the Lord is, and if He has let you down
and forsaken you, and all those all those negative thoughts attack your
heart. When that happens just come to a verse like this and say, Lord,
thank You that Your love toward me is higher than the heavens are
above the earth.
Psalm 103:12 gives us the greatest horizontal distance known to man –
“As far as the east is from the west”. See, you can pursue east, but you
cannot overtake it. You can pursue west, but you cannot overtake it.
And the reason you cannot overtake it is there is no east pole and there is
no west pole. We have a north and south pole. If I travel north I can
keep going north until I reach the North Pole and as soon as I pass it I’m
going south. You see, you can only go north so far. North ends with the
North Pole. If you do not turn around you will start going south, even
though you do not turn around.
Try it east and west. You go east, east, east, east, east, but there is no
East Pole so you just keep going east. You can go around and around
and around and you will go east forever. The same thing is true of west.
Fly as far east as the wings of your imagination will let you fly and with
every beat of your wings you just get further from the west. What a
picture! God says,
“As far as the east is from the west, so far have I removed your
transgressions from you.”
What a picture of forgiveness of sin! Sometime I wonder if God did not
put this vertical distance and horizontal distance in the same verse to
illustrate the cross. As high as the heavens are above the earth, as far as
the east is from the west. Oh, exactly so. Exactly so.
Now let me ask you this question. His loving kindness is higher than the
