Eco Warriors - Members of our Eco Committee wrote letters to a number of organisations, asking them to stop wrapping their catalogues in plastic. A few weeks later, a book seller, Badger Learning, replied with an apologetic letter and pledged to refrain from all plastic usage. They have stuck to their word and we have since received their most recent catalogue in an environmentally friendly wrapper.
Intergenerational Opera Project -Year 2 were privileged to be involved in a mini-intergenerational opera. A one-day trial proved so successful that it led to a project which saw the children visit the local Sunrise Care Home for six successive weeks to enjoy music making, singing
and composition with the residents. It was heartening
to witness the two age groups connecting through the creative arts.
Harvest Festival – Children from Nursery toYear 8 collected more than 25 crates of non-perishable food items which were donated to Eastbourne Food Bank to help those in our local community.
Remembering Others – The St Andrew’s Prep chapel is full of plaques and dedications to former staff and pupils who lost their lives in wars. In his Remembrance Day address, Mr Jones focused on the courageous endeavours of just two Old Androvians, Ian Liddell VC (OA 1933) who was killed in action in 1945,and SirVarryl Begg (OA 1922), who rose to be First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff.
VE Day – The 75th anniversary of VE Day was celebrated by the majority of the children remotely. Some decorated their front doors, others made cakes, more wrote letters as if from the front line. The children of our key worker parents had a typically British tea party with scones and wartime classic songs and Mr Jones’ address for pupils (which they accessed remotely) focussed on how St Andrew’s Prep pupils were evacuated to Thurlstone
in Devon before moving to Oakash in the village of Chaddleworth on the Berkshire Downs where they stayed for five years and celebratedVE Day 75 years ago.
Fighting Covid-19 – The school was pleased to offer goggles from our science lab to a local care home. Individuals have also made face masks for local businesses as well as support their elderly neighbours by making cakes, washing cars, cutting the grass and delivering goods.
