Scholarship awards for successful candidates will take effect from September 2020. Candidates will take part in the assessments in the spring term before the year of entry. The majority of the scholarships awarded will be between five and 20 percent, although in very exceptional circumstances, a more substantial award may be given. Where parental financial circumstances justify it, the fee reduction component of scholarships may be enhanced by means-tested bursaries* (see Bursaries section below). The funds available for scholarships and bursaries are carefully controlled by the Governors.
Candidates will be judged on their merits and St Andrew’s Prep reserves the right not to award any scholarships if there are no candidates of sufficient merit.
Conditions of Scholarships
We expect scholars to set themselves high standards in the way they conduct themselves, both in and around the school. The example they set will make them natural leaders among their peer group and we hope that they will both enjoy and make the most of the responsibility.A scholarship programme is in
place and all scholars will be closely monitored by either the Deputy Head, Head of Art, Head of Drama, Director of Music and Performing Arts or Director of Sport.A Record of Achievement will be kept and Scholars will be set aims and targets at the beginning of each term. Parents will receive a copy of the Record of Achievement at the end of a term.We will be holding a presentation evening for scholars and their parents early in September of the new academic year.
It is generally expected that all scholarships will be held for the duration of the candidate’s career at
St Andrew’s Prep. However, all scholarships are reviewed annually and St Andrew’s Prep reserves the right to withdraw scholarships if, in the opinion of the Headmaster and after careful monitoring procedures, the pupil is performing significantly below expectations. The amount of any award is regarded as a confidential matter between the parents and the Headmaster. Parents are expected to respect this confidentiality and any breach of this understanding is likely to lead to the withdrawal of the award.
Scholarships are not transferable to Eastbourne College or any other senior school. Separate assessments take place in Year 8 (occasionally earlier) for entry to senior schools in Year 9. For more information on scholarships to senior schools, please contact the Deputy Head.
Within this booklet there is further information regarding each of the six types of scholarships and application forms. Parents of external and internal candidates should complete the relevant application form and external applicants should also send a confidential reference form for completion to the Head or teacher of their child’s current school. References from out of school clubs and organisations will be welcome from all applicants but, with the exception of sport, are not essential.
Bursaries
It is important to distinguish between bursaries and scholarships as there is often confusion. Bursaries are separate from scholarships. Bursaries are offered in recognition of financial need and, in some cases, can be added to scholarship award amounts. In this instance, the deadline for bursary applications is Wednesday 20 January 2021.
All bursaries are means-tested according to the guidelines laid down by the Independent School Bursars’Association and parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form which is available, upon request, from the Registrar. General enquiries should be made to the Registrar, on 01323 744820 or email admissions@standrewsprep.co.uk, and specific questions regarding bursaries should be made to the Finance Director.
