                 40 | PREFECT SPEECHES
    HEAD TO HEAD
The following are excerpts from the wonderful speeches given by the Head Boys and Head Girls on Speech Day
ACADEMIC LIFE BY PHOEBE WEARNE
Online learning at St Andrew’s during the last lockdown had some positives in that the days were structured, we had live lessons and the teachers were always available to support us.
The negatives were that every day felt the same, particularly for those in the scholarship set who were set extra revision after school.Though it was possible to chat with friends online, physically not being at school and seeing my friends in person had an impact.
The other stresses involved IT failures although this occasionally worked to our advantage. For example when Mr Mackie-Savage asked if we could see his PowerPoint slides that he was sharing on Teams; we told him we couldn’t see them even though they were clearly visible! It meant we had 10 minutes of free time while he tried to sort out his non-existent IT failure!
Overall, the experience of online learning from home has made me stronger, more independent and appreciative of how hard the teachers have worked to prepare us for our exams.
Nothing beats St Andrew’s school life. I’ve had 11 wonderful years here and am grateful to the teachers for all their support throughout my learning.
My advice to younger pupils would be to embrace all the opportunities that this fantastic school has to offer – if you work hard, you can play hard, and hard work definitely pays off in the end.
BOARDING LIFE BY ISAAC LEE
Boarding for the past two years in this school has been wonderful and exciting as it has helped me build up confidence and independence in school life as well as boarding life.
The highlights of boarding in Colstocks for me are the trips. One of the trips which was a really special one was when we went to Chessington. It was my first visit there and the rides were so enjoyable.
I have also enjoyed a good variety of activities in boarding
and after school including art clubs, badminton and St Andrew’s Adventurers. These activities built up precious and unforgettable memories with my friends as well as the wonderful teachers here.
Thank you to Mr Tomsett, Sister Vicks, Miss Lancefield and all the staff who have looked after me.
St Andrew’s Prep is a wonderful school, full of joy and happiness which makes it more special than other schools.
PERFORMING ARTS BY APPLE VAN DER MEER
There are so many opportunities to express yourself in the St Andrew’s Prep Performing Arts programme.Whether you are in the Seniors, Middles, Juniors or Pre-Prep there are so many opportunities to perform on stage. There are musicals and straight plays, Nativities and many LAMDA evenings. There is also Drama Masterclass which is offered to senior pupils who are really keen on their acting.
Over my years at St Andrew’s I have done many plays including The Little Mermaid and A Christmas Carol which was my favourite. We all had so much fun making it. It was great that it was filmed instead of us acting in front of a live audience as we were able to correct anything that was wrong until it was perfect!
I enjoy each and every minute of performing on
stage because drama gives you time to forget everything and just focus on the role you are playing.
My favourite thing in drama is the rush of adrenaline and energy you get when performing and the clap of the audience after a song or dance. Another thing that I love about acting is the fact that you get to step into a different character’s shoes in order to portray their emotions. I embrace every opportunity that the school gives me to express myself and perform to the very best of my ability.
Singing is also great as it can relieve stress and can stimulate the immune response. It can also create a state of belonging and connection for some people. And dance is great too
