                WELCOME TO THE EASTBOURNIAN SOCIETY
If you are reading this, you are, in all likelihood, a member of the Eastbournian Society (ES).The ES brings together an extended family of Old Eastbournians (OEs), Old Androvians and Old Aschamians (OAs), current and former parents and staff, local businesses and other supporters. It’s quite a community.
EASTBOURNIAN SOCIETY | 43
Our raison d’être is to keep people connected - building relationships that last a lifetime in a mutually supportive and symbiotic way. We honour the traditions of our schools while embracing them as modern forward-thinking centres of excellence.
We offer an array of cultural, social, sporting, career and networking opportunities and communicate through regular newsletters and magazines. Our website is bursting with current news and updates. We also look after those benefactors who so generously support our schools.
As a community, we’re thriving, and as a team we feel extremely fortunate to be part of such an engaged, talented, vibrant and fascinating cohort. From September, ES HQ will be at the top of Old Wish Road in Craven Cottage (where there will always be a hot drink and sometimes even cake for our visitors!). As the Prep school and College align more closely, we look forward to getting to know our St Andrew’s family and wanted to introduce ourselves.
Emma Garrett, our Development Director, is well-qualified for the role as her relationship with Eastbourne College
spans a lifetime, starting at Tenby Lodge Nursery and Ascham Pre-Prep. Home was School House where her father, an English teacher, was housemaster and Emma joined the sixth form in 1984. Her ‘squiggly’ career has taken in marketing, fundraising, charity work and hospitality, so she brings a wealth of experience to the charity - the fact that southeast England is now known as ‘the wine capital of the UK’ may have had something to do with her latest career move!
David Blake manages the complex ES database and website, promotes future events and edits the magazine. David is your man if you change email or postal address or if you’d like to contact a fellow OE/OA. He works closely with St Andrew’s archivist Chris Laughton; they love to hear from alums who have photos or news to share. David has spent the last 15 years ensuring the smooth running of a frantically busy office, keeping his head when all around might be losing theirs!
Lulu Brown, our Events Guru followed her brother Alex (Blackwater) and father Robin (Pennell) to the College for sixth form where she was taught by John Thornley. After working in Australia and Singapore, Lulu became Head of Community and Ladies Football for Fulham Football Club. She

ran Legoland,Windsor before moving to Brighton and the ES as part-time events organiser (and not only in order to organise tasting trips to the champagne region of France!).
The legendary JT, aka John Thornley, spent 41 years (and half a term) teaching French at Eastbourne College and has taken on a number of roles within the ES over the years. Along with a number of school administrative roles, he now organises and hosts our cultural trips, always with his trusty camera in tow.
Last but by no means least, after a varied career spanning interior design, nursing and retail, Paul Jordan found his calling when he joined the archives as a volunteer. In 2018, he was appointed College Archivist. He is often to be found unravelling the identity of someone from fuzzy faded photographs and nick-names. His knowledge of the school and the town knows no bounds!
We look forward very much to building long-lasting, meaningful relationships with you all.
