“Replacing or upgrading your siding is a major improvement, and one that should be carefully considered,” says Roger. “To get the full benefit, make sure you use materials which match best for your home or cottage.”
Picking the right material is partly a matter of personal
and other considerations as well – some materials will provide better protection for longer periods of time and require less maintenance.
If you can envision selling your property at some point, consider how much your siding choice will increase your property value.
Naturally, aesthetics also play a role. “Select a siding which works seamlessly with the shape and structure of your home to help increase return on investment,” says Roger. “Also make sure the colour is complementary to your roof, windows, doors and other structures on your property.” Be sure you’re picking the colour from an actual sample piece rather than a colour swatch on a piece of cardstock.
Vinyl siding has been
the material of choice for decades, and with good reason: it comes in a wide array of colours and styles, while also being cost efficient to install. Its durability
is well recognized in the contracting world – vinyl performs well in extreme temperatures and is easy to maintain.
Fiber cement siding is made from a mixture of cement, cellulose and sand. The
material is moisture-resistant, non-combustible and can be customized to fit different looks and styles. It costs more than vinyl, and requires specialized tools for installation, but it looks fantastic and is highly durable.

Siding is a durable and cost-effective way to add beauty and value to your
home or cottage. It’s your first line of defence against the elements, and can even
help insulate your building. However, older siding wasn’t always designed to last forever, and there may come a time when siding needs to be replaced.
