feel and classic look. While aesthetically pleasing, top- quality wood can be quite expensive. Wood siding needs regular maintenance, including periodic staining or painting to prevent mold and protect the wood.
“However, if you really love wood siding, there are ways to lessen the hit on your budget,” says Roger. “You can choose a lower-quality wood and a higher quality stain, which will then last longer before it needs to be stained again.” Roger always advises asking about the source of the wood, too – there are industry standards to indicate that the wood has come from a sustainably-managed forest.
Aluminum is still a common material used for siding
on homes and cottages throughout Muskoka. The lightweight, durable siding can last for 40 years or more if properly maintained. Aluminum siding is fireproof, waterproof and isn’t made with organic materials – it won’t burn, melt, rot or be a food source for pests.
It’s also recyclable and the surface can be coated with enamel to match the look and style of other siding materials, including more traditional wood grains.
“Aluminum siding is also popular because it can be painted to your preference,” says Roger. “You could have a monotone exterior or multiple
colours and tones with only the cost of the paint.”
Engineered siding is a composite material made from wood and resin; heat- pressed for strength and density; treated with zinc borate, cut into planks, panels, shake and trim; and then topped with a moisture- resistant overlay, which can be smooth or embossed for a wood grain appearance.
It costs less than natural wood siding, while able
to mimic many of the appearances and styles better than other materials. It’s resistant to insects, mold
and mildew and – according to some industry testing – absorbs impact better than other materials.
“Engineered siding can
survive without warping
or deteriorating in extreme temperatures,” says Roger.
“It’s a green building material because most products are made from recycled wood and wood waste. It also cuts like wood siding and installs without the need for special tools.”
Once you’ve chosen the material for your home or cottage, it’s important to the right company
to the do the job. AM Group of Companies staff are specialists in their field who are fully insured – WSIB and general liability – and are experienced in both cottage and home projects.
“Hiring fully trained, insured and certified professionals to install your siding means the job will be done right,” says Roger. DS

“R eplacing or upgrading your siding is a major improvement, and one that should be carefully considered.”
