that needs to be considered. Even the best paints and stains perform best if they’re given time to cure – giving them some time before normal traffic returns to the cottage will help ensure a finish that endures.
Before his clients leave for the season, Chad will meet with them to discuss colour choice and scope of work, as well as to learn their plans for fall or winter use. If they’re coming up on the occasional weekend, he can work around their schedule.
“Obviously, exterior jobs must be done during the warmer weather,” says Chad. “But, it’s a good idea to plan those as well, to ensure they’re done
at the right times for the best protection of your property. Book now for next summer or it may be too late.”
Many options
When it comes to colour selection, Chad says simple tones continue to dominate in Muskoka. Interiors are made
up of various shades of white, while exteriors are sticking to browns, greys and black.
With white interior paint, the walls act as a blank canvas, ready for pops of colour to be added through art, furniture and décor. The same is true for painting the cottage’s siding black.
“Basic tones are still going strong,” he says. “White on your walls complements the focal points of the décor – the accents and furniture
– rather than overpowering them. A dark-shaded exterior coat lets colourful outdoor furniture pop.”
Be aware that the same paint can look surprisingly different when it’s used on wood or on drywall, with colours shifting depending on how the surface reflects or absorbs light. The paint’s sheen can also affect the way it looks.
“Lighting conditions create different appearances as well,”
says Chad. “A wall can appear one way in the shade and another under direct sunlight. We do our homework before starting and pick the right material to ensure it looks just right, no matter what time of the day it is.”
Whether it’s being used indoors on a hardwood
floors or an elm staircase, or outdoors on trim or siding, a quality stain does more than add colour. “Stain protects against water damage, rot, deterioration due to sunlight damage and more,” says Chad. “Staining your wood also deters ants and other pests from burrowing into your home or cottage. They can also bring out the natural colours in wood, leading to some amazing looks.”
