Aquality deck is an important part of cottaging in Muskoka. If you’re looking to add a
new one or replace an old one, there are many things
to consider – the day-to-day function being of utmost importance.
Matt Janczik of Muskoka Decks and Railings says determining what you want from your deck is the precursor to its design.
Seating areas, cooking
areas, lounging spots and entertainment spaces should all be properly planned. The design needs to take into account features like pergolas, hot tubs, access to the kitchen, and the views of the lake.
“Checking all the boxes and incorporating your desired functions into the design are imperative prior to the building stage,” says Matt.
DECK
“A good plan will establish the size and flow of the deck you need to maximize your enjoyment.”
Once the design is set, it’s
time to select the material you want. There is plenty of choice, ranging in price, style and longevity. Synthetic decking
is a strong, low-maintenance option, but there is also a range of wood options.
Kayu Batu, which resembles mahogany, is a strong
and beautiful hardwood which doesn’t require a
lot of maintenance and is sustainably sourced from Indonesia and Malaysia
in a regulated and environmentally responsible manner. It is also resistant to abrasion and decay.
Practical and cost-effective natural products include traditional Western red cedar and pressure-treated
wood. You won’t spend a
lot up front, but it will need replacing in 15 to 20 years.
Having a wonderful design and good decking material won’t matter if the installation isn’t done right. Improper installation can dramatically reduce the deck’s lifespan. That’s why it’s essential to
use experienced, certified and insured contractor to do the job right.
“We guarantee our work, and our materials come with a manufacturer’s warranty,” Matt says.
Added Value
Adding or upgrading your deck can be a wise investment. Increasing functional space
is a sure way to boost resale value to your property. Housing market research indicates a well-designed and -built deck can add between 51 and 65 percent of the

project cost to the resale value of the home; there are a few studies which put the figure as high as 80 percent.
The return you see is influenced by the size of the project and the materials used, Matt explains. Generally, the materials with a higher up-front cost
will have a correspondingly longer lifespan.
“Adding or upgrading a deck is a reliable way to increase your property’s value,” says Matt. “Make sure it’s the right fit for your cottage and maximizes style and function.” DS
