SHADE WISE Cut the rays, not the view
There’s a common PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT TURNBULL “For those lake-facing
focus among all
cottages in Muskoka: the water. Whether it’s right
at the water’s edge or on a ridge with a sweeping lake view, most cottages have been designed to maximize the view of the lake.
Modern designs take that a step further, with walls of lake-facing windows. They provide a wow-factor for cottagers, but with those gorgeous views come damaging UV rays and heat that can drive the
air conditioning unit into overdrive.
“Solar gain is a huge problem for many cottages,” says Melloney McNabb, owner
of Budget Blinds Muskoka.
“Although we love the sun streaming in
the window, those rays can drive up the cottage’s temperature, and fade everything from furniture to flooring.”
Fortunately, fighting the heat and rays is as simple as the right set of window shades.
When it comes to large, water-facing windows, Melloney suggests going with automated blinds.
“Automated blinds offer a clean look that won’t detract from the large windows,” says Melloney. “And they also eliminate the need to reach and strain when
trying to adjust.”
Automated blinds are controlled through a remote control or smart phone app, or automatically programed to lift and lower at pre-assigned times. Budget Blinds carries
a number of automated blind brands, but for large window systems, Melloney advises using Lutron, a company which is also known for its automated lighting systems.
“Lutron is one of the leaders in automated systems,” she says. “Their blinds are quiet, they have a range of fabrics and styles, and they rise and fall in a way that’s sure to impress,” noting that all of
the blinds in a room will rise and fall in unison, giving a streamlined, futuristic look. “It just looks so cool.”
Lutron shades are custom made to fit each window perfectly. On new builds they can be integrated into the electrical wiring and overall window design, or they can be retrofitted in an existing cottage and powered by battery.
For those who prefer sheer drapes, Lutron also offers track systems that pull panels into place along a channel.
windows, I like to go with a more sheer fabric, which can give your cottage adequate solar protection without fully blocking your view of the lake.”
To find the best option, Melloney suggests an in-home consultation, which allows
her to go over design options, gather exact measurements and help you envision the best solution for your space.
“At the end of the day, the right shades are like flooring and furniture, they’re necessary comforts to help you live better,” says Melloney. “I’m happy to help you find the right ones for you.” DS
