To continue helping you be the perfect tour guide while taking guests on your
boat, the building below is located on the island of Belle Isle in the Detroit River,
just north of downtown Detroit, on the Canadian side of the river.
This is the home of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.
The white building you see overlooking the Detroit River is the actual pilot house of the Great Lakes Freighter, S.S. William
Clay Ford. You can go inside, getting the feel of what it’s like to
be a captain of a freighter, while listening to the marine radio hear-
ing the actual freighter chatter coming down the river.
When you enter the museum, the first exhibit is the
Gothic Room, which was the gentlemen’s lounge of the City of
Detroit III. The City of Detroit III made regular trips from Detroit
to Cleveland and Buffalo.
The museum is also known for its extensive collection of
ship models and several are on display and rotate annually. You
can see one of the largest known collections of scale model ships
in the world.
I was invited
to the annual Lost Mariners Remembrance Ceremony by Captain Mel Riecher of
the Infinity-Ovation Yacht Charters last fall. As you may know, on November 10,
1975, the bulk freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior with all hands.
29 men were lost that night. Each year on that evening, a very special memorial
is held for this crew, as well as a memoriam to honor all lost mariners of the Great
Lakes. In addition to the reading of the crew of the Fitz, another all but forgotten
ship that sank with its crew is “remembered” and featured. This past memorial
remembered the Key Stone State. It had sank in a violent storm off the thumb
of Michigan 150 years ago on November 10th as it was headed from Detroit to
Milwaukee to be outfitted for Civil War service. 33 U.S. and Canadian crew were
lost. Continued on page 28 .......
