                                                             long?

Carl from Fife Lake, MI, Their lips are blue, they are shivering, you know they are cold...but they still won't
brings in a big walleye come out of the water. But, what does this lip color really mean?
         and lots of
silver bass in May. When your lips turn blue, it means your body isnĀ“t getting enough oxygen. When
you are exposed to cold, your body re-directs the flow of blood from the skin to the
vital organs in an attempt to conserve the warmth for the heart, brain, and kidneys.
While swimming in cold water, our bodies attempt to remain warm and our blood
vessels narrow (contract) so that blood flow to the skin is reduced to conserve body
heat. This is called "cyanosis." (If you saw the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding,
cyanosis is derived from the color cyan, which comes from kyanous, the Greek word
for blue). During cyanosis, tissues are uncharacteristically low
on oxygen, and therefore tissues that would normally be filled
with bright oxygenated blood are instead filled with
                                                       darker, deoxygenated
                                                       blood which appears
                                                       blue.

                                                         After you leave the
                                                       water and warm up,
                                                       your blood begins to
                                                       circulate normally
                                                       through your skin
                                                       again, and your red
                                                       lip color returns....but,
                                                       I think we all know
                                                       that blue lips mean it's
time to get out of the
                                                       water....
