Inner Conflict
July
I remembered several Bible verses as I skimmed over the article, “Are Carroll
County’s Kids Too Fat?” featured at the top of the Carroll Magazine which had been on
the coffee table at the Antrim 1844. Oh the connection of the ‘Mind Body Spirit’! Kids’
eating what they know is good for them, not what they want to eat!
th
I had given a 4 of July sermon two days earlier telling about the many sacrifices our
forefathers had made and the history of Independence Day and its significance in our
lives today.
The sermon left me with a very patriotic stance so that I decided to use my gift
certificate for ‘The Antrim 1844’ in Taneytown which has a historical ambiance.
I anticipated being pampered just 12 miles from Gettysburg rather than experience
the usual warm weather, back yard BBQ.
At 4 PM I was ready to be served the ‘high tea’ and the hand passed hors d'oeuvres at
7 PM. Afterward, I was escorted to the Smokehouse Restaurant for my choice of three
elegant appetizers, a chic salad, intermezzo, choice of four amazing entrées, and a
Panaché of desserts.
It was after dinner that my mind went back to the Carroll County Kids article and to
the Apostle Paul who wrote the letter to the Corinthians saying: “… “All things are
lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. (1 Cor. 6:1 NRSV). Had I been
dominated by the food? No, I had not! Everything was very delicious and I had made
healthy choices.
It was just that my stomach was full; and when you are full, it is easy to think about
the ‘Mind Body Spirit’ connection. Paul states, “…do you not know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God,…1Cor. 6:19 (NRSV).

Wow! If my body is a temple, then let me continue to treat it like a temple
This experience prompted me to declare: “Now is the time to advertise a future workshop
for adults at church!” With persons coming together for ‘Mind, Body, Spirit’ education,
support, information, we all can continue our healthier lifestyles. Being a trained
facilitator, I feel I can keep the newly-formed workshop on track as we listen to audio
tapes on The Neuropsychology of Weight Control and Self Discipline, motivational tapes
by the nation’s top leaders and intermittently have discussions while connecting the
information with what the Bible teaches us about ‘Mind Body Spirit’!
The Apostle Paul states that he is flesh and does not understand his own actions. Paul
says, “For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” (Romans 7 NRSV).
This workshop is to assist each other to do what we want to do and not be dominated by
the apple pie à la mode that calls to us, “Come and eat me!” Interested in trying out this
new workshop? Then please contact me.
