Probably, when cave man existed, people communicated by pulling someone’s hair or
tapping them with their club. Both ways, used touch to get their attention.
Through the years, we have learned to communicate via many different methods…
Some are through languages, and the written word. We transport our thoughts through,
Email, phone, movies, CD’s, DVD’s etc. And we know that some communication is
through body language. We even communicate with the choice of clothes we wear, the
neighborhoods we live in, and the cars we drive. Which brings me to the point I want to
make in this column.
More and more, what we see in the movies and TV is being played out in the real
world. Moviemakers (TV too) have a terrific burden on them in this day and age. It is
imperative that their movies make a profit. Therefore, they seek to entice the public to
see the movie and then tell others about it. The competition is so great that they use
sensationalism; something that will make the audience FEEL the movie. Usually this
manifests into some horrific car chases… with all kinds of car fender-benders and over
turned cars. I am not telling you anything you don’t already know except, I believe it is
the reader’s responsibility to explain this new Hollywood system to younger people, so
that they understand the money making purpose behind the Hollywood system. Movies
are not telling us to drive the way the stunt drivers practice; the stunts are purely for
entertainment and to grab your attention.
Bible verse 1 Cor. 10:24 (NJKV) states “Let no one seek his own, but each one the
other’s well-being.” But, when we choose to drive in a reckless manner (like we have
seen in the movies), we endanger the lives of others, which communicates to us, “I don’t
care about you!”
Readers, I drive a lot and I see the results of what years of these types of movies etc.
have created on our highways (‘road monsters’ RMs). I also see the catastrophic results
on young bodies and their families as I visit them in hospitals and sometimes give their
funerals. Let’s put a stop to this! Rude driving has become an epidemic. In Bible verse
1 Thes. 5:11 (NRSV) the message is: “Therefore comfort each other and edify one
another.” When I see RMs cutting off other vehicles, I see a total lack of consideration
for humanity. In essence they are communicating, “I don’t care about you. Get out of
my way…I matter, but you do not! I have to be somewhere; move over for me, because
my time is more important than your time!” If confronted face to face, with the modern
‘road monsters’, I bet they would be amazed at hearing what they truly communicate to
others witnessing their driving. Let us be wise enough to let them know how their lack of
care for their fellow human being is viewed. Maybe we can show them the sign of the
cross.
