God and science
August
Faith in God and faith in science can be harmonious.
Several hundred scientists and theologians who met at Berkeley 2004 were
unanimous in agreeing that science and religion are converging, and what they are
converging on is God.
Bill Gibson, Human Biology Instructor at Carroll Community College said that he
believes there is a God… noting that cells and the systems of our bodies are so organized
that there has to be an ‘intelligent designer’. Gibson lecturers that blood cells live only
120 days. (It kind of hits you in the face that we need to supply our bodies with God’s
food to replenish those cells. I’m not sure how long a heart muscle can withstand a
consumption of french fries with saturated fat, cholesterol laddened red meat, and sugary
drinks.)
Professor of Philosophy Antony Flew had been a debater for atheism for decades
however, he renounced his atheism 2004 because "the argument to Intelligent Design is
enormously stronger than it was when I first met it. It now seems that the findings of
more than fifty years of DNA research have provided materials for a new and
enormously powerful argument to design."
Although Einstein did not believe in a personal God, he thought, “God does not play
dice; Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”
Francia S. Collins M.D.,PhD. (who led the Human Genome Project) joined US
President Bill Clinton in making the announcement (identifying approximately 25,000
genes in human DNA) that beamed around the world, “This is the hereditary code of life;
our own instruction book had been assembled of all the DNA of our species.” DNA is an
elegant and simple system of data storage used by every living organism on Earth. It
consists of four base molecules named T, C, G and A. Collins announced, “Our genomes
are made up of 3.15 billion of these letters. If we were to read them out 24/7, it would
take 31 years and you have that information in every cell in your body. If we printed it
out, the report would reach the height of the Washington Monument. Physics, chemistry,
and biology can all fit together with belief in God and the Bible; Science has no power to
address questions like: why you are here and what the meaning is.”
Bill Gibson is familiar with the Human Genome Project and lectures about DNA at
CCC. After taking his course I understand even more that we have a miraculous God-
made body. Gibson says, “70% of our body is water, 91% of plasma is water, and our
body stores about 5 liters of blood.” God must have put pure water on earth for us to
drink, you think?
Homeostasis keeps the body’s internal environment balanced; our 98.6 temperature,
7.4 pH, blood glucose, all fluctuate, but not much, otherwise illness would result. The
CCC science course substantiated my belief in God and it also solidified my
understanding that faith in God and faith in science can be harmonious.
