Give a rare gift of optimism
December
We live in a topsy-turvy kind of world today.
What we were taught by society, the church, and our parents, who sought to prepare
us to survive by standing on our own two feet, is all pooh poohed today. Credit cards
were a convenience, now they’re an addiction.
Being soft spoken, modest, humble is out; the loudest get their way, the one who
shows the most skin gets the guy, and the humble are left in the dust. However, whether
soft spoken or the loudest, … people are feeling pessimistically unhappy these days. One
reason is: they receive only worldly rewards but are spiritually bankrupt.
All that we have in this country is taken for granted. It is raining blessings yet we do
not acknowledge these blessings. People used to have confidence in the United States
and their leaders. We were united and optimistic. During the Great Depression Franklin
D. Roosevelt told citizens to take their money out from under the mattress and put it in
the bank… and they did.
During Roosevelt’s first inaugural address he said, “…the only thing we have to fear
is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts…
to convert retreat into advance.” He was essentially saying, “If we can’t shake our
pessimistic economic outlook, it will be tough to turn things around.” (FDR Library) He was
calling for a little irrational exuberance.
My friends, what are we doing today? We have come to worship, not God, but the
daily news editors and Hollywood. What spin are they spinning? How are we
internalizing what they report?
Harry S. Truman said, "It's a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it's a
depression when you lose yours." We create our own life, with every thought we think.
As a nation, we are destroying ourselves with the negativity.
Joel Osteen preaches that prosperity will come as a gift to those who believe in God
and he is put down for it. Winston Churchill was not afraid to speak optimistically,
“Today we may say aloud before an awestruck world: We are still masters of our fate.
We are still captains of our souls.” To paraphrase Henry Ford, if you think you can’t, or
can, you will be right either way. You are the magnate that attracts everything to you
through your thoughts. We see abundance in the Universe. The earth is filled with untold
riches. Our air is vibrant with power. The problem is man binds himself up like a slave
to the world. But the Divine Plan is one of freedom. Listen to your Inner Voice and be
free.
Human intellect cannot fathom the potential that God has for you. “Ask and it will be
given…”(Matt. 7:7).
With Christmas just around the corner start being Christmas now. Stop the
negativity! Listen to God and start giving out presents - not tangible stuff! Give out your
optimism and positive ness! Believe that God will take care of our magnificent free
country and us as well!
