OUR MISSION IN ACTION
Zachary (Zach) Thompson, 16, is blind. The North Brandon Family YMCA pool is his happy place. He thrived with the help of the Y Adaptive Swim Program when he started there in 2023. His grandmother, Deborah Kassel brought him to the Y and says she “didn’t look elsewhere” for Zach.
Michael McCoy, is the Y’s Senior Lifeguard, who helped Zach. Deborah says Michael was beyond “amazing.” “Michael took to Zach immediately. He was so patient, encouraging and never raised his voice. It was like poetry in motion and magic.”

children learned to swim and be safe around water, which is critical considering more children under the age of four drown in Florida than anywhere else in the nation. The Tampa Y is committed to doing what it takes to ensure not one more child drowns in Tampa Bay.
