LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO
Dear YMCA volunteer
On behalf of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA Oversight Committee, I welcome you
to our YMCA family as a valued member of a Center Advisory Board. As a top-rated 4-star
charity, the Y’s cause is to strengthen the foundations of the community by nurturing the
potential of every child and teen, promoting healthy living and supporting and giving back to our
neighbors in need.
With a commitment to three areas of focus - youth development, healthy living and social
responsibility - the Y ensures everyone has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and
thrive. The Y believes in identifying community needs – and then working toward solutions that
create meaningful, lasting change. Committed volunteers, like you, help us achieve this goal by
volunteering your time, talents and treasures. You play a critical role in guiding our organization
and fulfilling our mission each and every day.
We believe all kids deserve the chance to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s
why the Tampa Y provides opportunities for thousands of youth to cultivate the values, skills and
relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer so they can have fun and grow
together. We encourage good health and foster connections through fitness, sports and shared
interests. The Y offers a variety of programs to prevent and manage chronic diseases, to heal and
gain support and to improve physical and social health.
Passionate volunteers, like you, help tell our Y story, support our life-
changing causes and respond to Tampa Bay’s most critical needs.
Your efforts help mentor at-risk teens, provide kids and families with water safety skills that
prevent drowning and ensure our facilities and programs are welcoming to all - regardless of
age, income or background.
Our Oversight Committee is comprised of Center Advisory Board Chairpersons and at large
Governance Board Members. We published this handbook to support your efforts in advancing
the mission and work of the Y. At any time, should you have a question, please never hesitate to
reach out to the Center Executive or Board Chair at your Center.
Again, thank you for joining our cause and for supporting a charitable organization that has
served children, families and communities in the Tampa Bay area for over 130 years.
Yours in good health,
Matt Mitchell,
President and
Chief Executive Officer
Dena Shimberg,
Oversight Committee Chair
