The Bridge
Kaleidoscope limbs
Abbey Branco
I dream in periwinkle blue
and crushed sea glass
and when I dip my fingers in the base of your spine,
I can feel your heartbeat against my skin
calming me
soft summer sea eats away at our bodies,
sucks out every sacred notion
and white lie we thought we could get away with
I cannot tell you what you mean to me
I don’t even know what I mean to myself
they say you have to love yourself before another,
but that means I’d have to glue back the shattered shards to my bedroom mirror
and throw away my own shadow
I see daylight in sepia and caramel drops,
and when I kiss you I cannot say how badly I want to taste blood,
I want you to know how much you scare me,
how much this thumping in our chests makes me want to shoot out of the sky and land face first
into the open arms of the ocean’s waves
I thought I could make you as happy as the sky,
but I don’t really dwell on false hope anymore
