Page 3 - Pre-school Dance Plans: Autumn
P. 3

Repeat until everyone is in a circle. Please use this song every time you need the children in a circle throughout the lesson.
Tell the children that soon the season will be changing to autumn. “Does anyone know what happens in the autumn?”. Reveal the green leaf laminate and ask the children to tell you what colour it is. Ask them if they know what colour leaves turn in the autumn. Reveal red, yellow and brown leaf laminates. Ask the children if they know what else happens to the leaves in the autumn (they fall off the trees). You can also discuss how the temperature will get colder.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
5. Fine motor skills: ‘Four Autumn Leaves’ (unknown)
Say the rhyme three times, using the finger movements below. Make sure to alternate which hand you use after each repeat. Try pausing before the numbers to see if the children can say them for you. On the last repeat, encourage the children to say all the words with you.
Four autumn leaves, in a big old tree, (hold up four fingers)
One blew away (blow on fingers), and then there were three. (three fingers left) Three little leaves, with nothing to do,
Another blew away (blow), and then there were two. (two fingers left)
Two little leaves, in the autumn sun,
One blew away (blow), and then there was one. (one finger left)
Being all alone, wasn't much fun,
The last one blew away (blow), and then there were none. (fist only, no fingers left) * Running time approx. 2 mins.
6. Choreographed dance: ‘Four Seasons’ performed by Hi-5
Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
“So now that we know all about autumn, who can tell me what the other seasons are called? So, how many seasons are there altogether? Now I’m going to teach you a dance about all four seasons.” Teach the children the tricky moves first, then play the track and perform the dance all together, using the choreography from the video.
*Running time approx. 5 mins.
7. Action song: ‘Autumn Time is Coming’ (tune of ‘Frère Jacques’, traditional) Red leaves falling, red leaves falling, (twinkle fingers high in the air and slowly
bring them down to the ground)
On the ground, on the ground.
(pat alternating hands on the ground)
Autumn-time is coming, autumn-time is coming,
(clap hands) All around, all around. (roly poly)
Ask the children to choose different coloured leaves to sing about (e.g. ‘Orange leaves falling...’). See if they can remember the colours you talked about at the beginning of the lesson.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
8. Working with Props: ‘The Four Seasons, Autumn Movement One’ performed by Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra
Give each child a scarf to represent an autumn leaf. Play the track and the children follow you in a story dance.
