COURSE: AP CAPSTONE SEMINAR COURSE CODE: APSEM PREREQUISITE: None
YEAR COURSE: 10 credits GRADES: 10, 11
UC/CSU – SUBJECT “G”
AP Seminar is an inquiry-based course designed to engage students in cross-curricular conversations that explore real-world topics and issues from multiple perspectives. Students are empowered to collect and analyze information for relevancy, credibility, and validity, and to synthesize this information into crafted, evidence-based arguments presented in a variety of formats (written, multimedia, and oral). The course focuses on skill sets rather than on content specific to a particular discipline: college level research; synthesizing and articulating research into formally presented arguments, both written, multi-media, and oral; and producing these arguments and presentations both individually and in teams. Initially, units of content provided by the instructor are used to guide student research; leading to a student team-selected research project and presentation second semester, and an individual research project prompted by stimulus
materials from the College Board, supplemented by student research.
COURSE: AP RESEARCH
COURSE CODE: APRSCH
PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF AP SEMINAR WITH AN AP SCORE OF 3 OR HIGHER UC/CSU – PENDING
AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000 to 5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.
