Expository reading and writing uses short, current works of nonfiction that focus on current debatable topics. The primary sources are newspaper and magazine articles, scholarly journals, and electronic resources. Grammar and poetry included. Students will study S.A.T. vocabulary, Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. There will be an exploration of various writing experiences, including one major persuasive paper based on library research from multiple sources.

English III covers a chronological study of American literature, including essays, short stories, poetry, and novels. Composition and critical analysis of the literature are included. Students will study S.A.T. vocabulary and will write a major paper based on library research skills. It follows English I and II as UC/CSU preparation.

PREREQUISITE: Students in college prep courses applying for honors courses must receive an “A” both semesters in the prerequisite course(s), and take the departmental placement exam.
Students currently in honors must receive a “B” or higher both semesters in the prerequisite course(s).
English III Honors is an in-depth study of major American writers. Students select authors to “specialize” in, and this outside reading is another attempt to give them a solid background of literature and analysis. College preparation includes S.A.T. vocabulary, timed writings, and a major paper based on library research skills. Composition and critical analysis of the literature are stressed. Students must maintain a grade of “A” or “B” to remain in the class. Students should expect to have a minimum of one hour of homework each day in this class.

English III AP surveys American literature on a college level. The literature includes selections from all genres ranging from 1600 to present day. Writing focuses on analytical techniques with an emphasis on prose patterns and rhetoric. Assignments are frequent, completed both in and out of class.
