This course emphasizes analytical thinking, composition, and research using the classics of world literature. All students study grammar and vocabulary units and write the Documented Critical Essay (AHS Only). Shakespeare’s works are studied in each class. Literary selections, drawn from the Las Virgenes core literature, may include Greek tragedy, mythology, and British, South American, Continental, Asian and African classics. Students should expect continuous, independent reading and writing at an advanced level appropriate for college.

PREREQUISITE: Students in college prep courses applying for honors courses must receive an “A” both semesters in the prerequisite course(s), and take the departmental placement exam.
Students currently in honors must receive a “B” or higher both semesters in the prerequisite course(s).
This class is to be composed of students who have demonstrated high ability in English and who are willing to meet the stringent course workload required of any Honors student. The major focus of the class will be on an intrinsic-analytic approach to literature and a stress on clarity, relevance, vigor and originality in composition. Course content will be based upon “great books,” plays and poetry in world literature. The written essays will explore four broad areas of literary analysis: meaning, structure, style, and background and influences. In addition, the course will prepare students for the Advanced Placement English Literature test given in the spring of their senior year. Students must maintain a grade of “A” or “B” to remain in the class. Summer reading assignments are required.

ELD is an individualized, sheltered English class designed for students of limited English proficiency to gain English language fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Depending on students’ needs, ELD focuses on phonics, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, grammar, writing and study skills. ELD serves as an elective for English learners who are enrolled in a regular English class. ELD also serves as a general English class for students in the earlier stages of English language acquisition.
THE FOLLOWING ELECTIVES MAY NOT BE SUBSTITUTED TO MEET THE LAS VIRGENES GRADUATION REQUIREMENT IN ENGLISH.
