This class will be composed of students who are particularly interested in writing memoirs, short stories, screenplays, journals, and poetry. It will study the various techniques used to create a work of literature with emphasis on helping students develop skills in their own writing. This year-long course will be organized by genre, focusing on personal writing, short story, poetry, drama, and myths. The final project will be a literary magazine to showcase the students’ finest effort.

Journalism emphasizes a variety of writing skills required by the modern journalist including the writing of news, features, critical reviews, editorials, and sports. Reading and analysis of relevant literature, critical thinking, and research skills are required. This class is the prerequisite for Newspaper.

COURSE: CHINESE I YEAR COURSE: 10 credits COURSE CODE: GCP1 GRADES: 9, 10, 11, 12 PREREQUISITE: Grade of “C” or better in both semester of the previous English class

Chinese I introduces students to the language and culture of China. The goal is to develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in Mandarin Chinese and to understand the customs and life of modern Chinese. The course objectives include the following: (1) Speaking: students develop accurate pronunciation through the Pinyin vocabulary (2) Listening: students understand daily conversation (3) Reading: students are able to read over 150 Chinese characters and essays with or without Pinyin (4) Writing: students write Chinese characters, and short sentences. Cultural activities are arranged to provide each student with opportunities to enhance language and cultural learning; these activities include Chinese movies, Chinese performances, field trips such as visiting museums, markets, restaurants, as well as Chinese traditional arts and crafts.

Students continue the work begun in Chinese I by emphasizing the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and learning more about the Chinese culture. Instruction is expanded beyond the textbook to include magazines, newspapers, short stories, and poetry. Oral presentations in Chinese are required of all students.
