This course gives the students the opportunity to widen their knowledge of French. The students are taught the finer points of grammar not covered in French II. The course focuses on reading, writing, listening, and speaking contemporary French. Texts from throughout the French speaking world are used and various aspects of French culture are discussed.

French IV offers a more extensive exposure to French literature and other aspects of the culture from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. The major emphasis is on developing the ability to read and discuss fluently in French. Writing skills are practiced through short critiques of selected literature (excerpts from longer works, plays, short stories, and poems). A review of grammar is included as needed. This class will be conducted in the target language.

PREREQUISITE: A grade of “A” or better in French III (both semesters) Recommendation of
French III teacher. Students in honors must receive a “B” or higher both semesters in the prerequisite courses.
This course is designed for students who want to continue to develop an in-depth knowledge of the language through the study of literature and culture at an advanced level. Students will read a selection of short stories, news articles and poetry. Level IV Honors will review all previously learned grammar while enriching and applying this knowledge. There will be an emphasis on the development of formal written compositions and oral proficiency through presentations and discussions. This class will be conducted in the target language. Due to the fact that the French IV and V classes are combined, the curriculum will alternate between a language based curriculum and a literature based curriculum on a yearly basis.

UC/CSU-Subject E
This course is designed for students who have an excellent grasp of the French language, as well as a historical perspective of French literature. Novels, plays and poems are read and discussed in French. Students read independently and present their own critiques. The course prepares students for the AP Exam in all four skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Students earning a grade of “A” or “B” are expected to take the AP exam.
