“Oh Father, I Pray, Give Another Comforter”
John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” There are Trinitarians that will use this passage of scripture to signify that there is a third person in the godhead. What is the Comforter, and who is the Comforter?
The Comforter was prophesied of old by Joel in the book of Joel 2:28-29, 28.) “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29.) And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days I will pour out my spirit.” In Acts 2:16-18 apostle Peter refers to the prophet Joel’s statement as quote, 16.) “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17.) And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18.) And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 and continues to be poured out upon mankind still today.
Two other references regarding the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament are found in Psalms 51:11-12 and Isaiah 63:10-11. These two passages of scripture do not give any hint, clue or leading to a third person in the Godhead.
Psalm 51:11-12, 11.) “Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12.) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”
Isaiah 63:10-11, 10.) “But they rebelled, and vexed his holy spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. 11.) Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his holy spirit within him?”
There is no evidence given in the Old Testament that there is any depiction of a third person in the godhead. There are many references that one will find to backup this remark. Here are a couple of examples. The Encyclopedia Americana by Americana Corp., 1959 edition, Volume XXVII, p. 69, See – Trinity Doctrine, “The Doctrine of the Trinity is nowhere expressly taught in the Old Testament.” The second paragraph states from the beginning, “In the New Testament it is evident that the doctrine of the Trinity in the divine nature is clearly and copiously taught.” [ This is not true. Nowhere in the old original Hebrew writings does it signify a triune godhead. The apostles did not teach this idea or theology to anyone as taught by Jesus Christ himself. The same reference makes note that the teaching of the triune is derived from the Nicene Creed as established in 325 A.D. Look at the last paragraph regarding the Trinity Doctrine. As quote] “Among the definitions which resulted from the conflict of opinion, in the early church with regard to the doctrine of the Trinity, that which was adopted by the Catholic
