the virgin Mary is Immanuel, which is interpreted God with us. He also declared that His name should be called Jesus, meaning "Yeshua", the Lord our Saviour, for He shall save his people from their sins. Jesus Christ came to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26). This truth has already been mentioned in connection with the first purpose of the incarna tion, but it needs to be set out more specifically as the purpose above all pur poses. Jesussaid,"ForeventheSonofMancamenotto ministeredunto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
It is clearly indicated that Jesus Christ needed to become a man in order to die for the sins of mankind. His blood and flesh is the saving power of God. Hebrews 2:9 reads "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man." John also declares, "And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin" (I John 3:5). However, He was made a curse in the eyes of the accusers that they might crucify Him as one of the lawbreakers (Galatians 3:13).
Several things should be noted. If Christ came to give His life a ransom for many, then we know that He came to redeem men from their sin by His death. We also know that His death was substitutionary for those who shall accept it. The idea of putting away sin refers to the idea of the scapegoat of the Old Testament. On the annual Day of Atonement, one goat wjis offered in sacrifice and another was sent into the wilderness after the sins of the peo ple had been confessed upon its head (Leviticus 16:20-22). Likewise, Christ was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. We should note here that goats in the Scripture usually tjrpifies sinners (Matthew 25:32). In the Old Testament, goats carried the sin of believers. Now in the New
Testament it is the Lamb of God, the sinless Christ, who was slain to fulfill the prophecy of Genesis 22:8 "And Abraham said. My son, God will pro vide himself a lamb for a burnt offering." We know that in the fulfillment of this prophecy, not only did God provide a lamb, but also this lamb was Christ, the Word of God made flesh, God nianifested in His own flesh. Note it says, "...God will provide himself..." (Genesis 22:8). We should also notice that the ram found on the Mount by Abraham, after the angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven (C^enesis 22:10,13) had no earthly owner but was miraculously prepared by God, like Melchizedek, who was "with out descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life." This is the perfect type of the Lamb of God, the Word of God made flesh, able to take
away sin Qohn 1:29).
Adamic blood and flesh could never be able to save sinners. Unlike mere human beings, Christ was absolutely divine offspring (Luke 1:35), the holy andrighteousOne. IntheKingJamesVersion,Acts3:14callsHimtheHoly
