IV - The True Meaning of Chrlsfs Death
The infinite holy Son of God gave his life and died in our stead so that all who respond in faith would not die, but have abundant life Qohn 10:10). Isaiah declares, "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt meike his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper inhishand"(Isaiah53:10). Ingivingadefinitionoftheatonementseveral items must be noted: Christ died to "^.swallow up deathin victory and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day Lo, this is our God; we have waited for

Christ did not die for His own sin. Christ, the Word of God made flesh, is nature holy. He declared of Himself, "Which of you convinceth me of sin?" Oohn 8:46; cf. Hebrews 4:15; I Peter 2:22; H Corinthians 5:21). Everywhere in the scriptures, it is send that He died for the sins of others. His sufferings were .not sjnnpathetic sufferings of a friend, but the substitution- arysufferingsoftheLambofGodforthesinoftheworld. "Buthewas
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chas tisement ofour peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:5-6).
"While we were yet sinners, Quist died for us" (Romans 5:8). "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures" (I Corinthians 15:3). "For [God] hath made him to be sin for us: who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" (II Corinthians 5:21).
