them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night" (Exodus 13:21). "I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat" (Leviticus 16:2). So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD" (I Kings 8:11; cf. II Chronicles 5:13,14; 7:2-3; Exodus 13:21; 14:19; 16:10; 33:9; 40:34-36; Romans 8:9-14; Nehemiah 9:15-23; Numbers 16:42; 10:11; 12:5; Deuteronomy 1:33; 31:15; Psalm78:14;Isaiah4:5;Psalm105:39). "..Andwerebaptizedunto Mosesin the cloud and in the sea" (I Corinthians 10:1,2; cf. Matthew 3:11; Acts 2:1-4).
This is a perfect type of the New Testament work of the Holy Ghost in the church. If the cloud of the fire was necessary to guide the Israelites to Canaan, then the Holy Ghost and fire is very essential to guide the New Testament church to the heavenly Jerusalem.
2 Dew
The Holy Ghost is symbolized as dew: "Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead" (Isaiah 26:19; cf. Deuteronomy 33:28; Hosea 14:5; Psalm 133:3; Genesis 27:28; Micah 5:7; Exodus 16:13-14; Job 29:19-20).
3 Rain and lightening
The Holy Ghost is symbolized as rain: "Be glad then, ye children of Zion and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month" Qoel 2:23; cf. Zechariah 10:1; Isaiah 55:10; 1Samuel 12:18; Exodus 19:16; Exodus 20:18; Job 37:4).
4 Oil
Oil symbolizes the pouring upon and the anointing of the Holy Spirit The Bible says, "And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him" (Leviticus 8:12; cf. Psalm 23:5; Leviticus 14:17; Exodus 30:25-32; Psalm104:15; Zechariah 4:1-12; Exodus 25:6; Exodus 35:14)!
5 Water
Water from the smitten rock is a symbol of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, starting from the day of Pentecost: "Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams over flowed..." (Psalm 78:20; I Cor 10:1-4).
