Library Report
Another busy year in the life of the Southland Boys’ High School Library. We con nue to build on the work we do with classes around teaching essen al research skills. We are truly a 24/7 library where we go to classrooms, work with classes who come to the library and provide service and informa on online through our library web page.
Our whole school community has access to this website through the school website or by using this link: h p://bit.ly/SBHSLIBAPP
You can search for books in our collec on, discover great new books to read, nd good quality research sources, and request purchases. There are even videos to watch to show you how to use it.
Sta and students have been using the library for work and play.
During intervals and lunch mes, the library becomes a lovely social space, where boys play chess, cards or choose other games available. Some of the boys read and work, while others play educa onal games or work on their coding on the computers. Due to our very keen chess players, we
put a call out for more chessboards and had some donated, including a beau ful decora ve marble set.
In October, two of our student librarians featured in an ar cle about the youth members of school library teams in New
Zealand. William and Vere represented Southland Boys’ with credit. They are both a ne example of students displaying the school values of Service and Responsibility. You can read the ar cle online from this link: bit.ly/SLOCT18
On the horizon, Senga White, the school’s Research & Learning Coordinator, has
been awarded an NZEI Scholarship for 2019, where she will travel to the UK to inves gate collabora ve prac ce between teachers and librarians with a view to bringing new ideas and informa on back to New Zealand. This builds on the Teaching and Learning Research Ini a ve-funded three-year project already underway around the place of teacher and librarian collabora on in teaching informa on literacy skills.
Enjoy a res ul summer sprinkled with good books, and we look forward to a new year lled with new friendships, new stories and new learning.
