SHIRLEY BOYS’ INTERSCHOOL
Colts:
In our Colts inter-school with Shirley Boys’, the boys made a posi ve start, bowling Shirley out for 118. Aaron Hart took 4 wickets, S rling McKelvie 2 wickets, with Shaun Clapperton, Jackson Ronald and Captain Bruno Burgess all taking 1 wicket each.
In reply, SBHS had a number of starts with Shaun (27), S rling (20) Aaron (17) and Jake Kura-Wharepouri (13), in our total of 109. This gave Shirley Boys’ a lead of 9 heading into the second innings.
Southland Boys’ again bowled well, dismissing Shirley Boys’ for 95 in their second innings. Aaron, S rling and Jackson all took 3 wickets with Lachie Nimmo taking the last wicket to fall.
We needed 106 for an outright win and Shaun Clapperton and Lachie Nimmo put on an outstanding display with an opening partnership of 96 runs before Lachie was out for 34. Shaun was 53 not out when the winning boundary was hit by Bruno Burgess.
This was a great e ort by the Colts, a talented team who will con nue to develop from this rst inter-school of the season.

SHIRLEY BOYS’ CRICKET INTER- SCHOOL 2018
The Southland Boys’ High School 1st XI travelled to Christchurch on Saturday 10th February, to play against The Willows Cricket Club and Shirley Boys’ High School. Unfortunately, the match at The Willows was called o early Sunday morning due
to rain. This annual match is a real season highlight and it was a shame that we couldn’t get any play. Mike Dorme from The Willows was just as disappointed as we were with the cancella on. Our focus then turned to our annual inter-school with Shirley Boys’. Overnight rain meant a delay to the start of the match, with SBHS captain Sean Withy winning the toss and bowling on an interes ng wicket. There were some wet spots on the wicket and the ball seamed, took o at mes and also kept low as the match progressed. It made
The Southland Boys’ High School 1st X1 cricket team travelled to Dunedin to play King’s High School 1st X1 on the 18th and 19th February, 2018, in our annual interschool match. Leaving school at 7am on the Sunday, we travelled up to a long rst day, with playing hours from 10.30am to 7pm.
Losing the toss, we were sent in to bat
on a wicket that was heavily grassed, but provided reasonable pace and bounce. Blake Harper (57) and Captain Sean Withy (59) provided the backbone of our rst innings of 163 runs. Blake was the epitome of pa ence and his 57 runs came from 190 balls. This sort of determina on and hard gra has been a dying art and Blake was brilliant in defence, showing the younger players how to do it. Sean was more of an a acking threat with his runs coming o 96 balls.
In reply King’s High School were 115 for 3 at the end of the day and in a good posi on.
Our bowling gures were as follows:
Sean Withy Alec Mathieson Blair McKenzie Hayden Hart Jed Mockford Blake Harper
1 for 23 o 11 overs 0 for 5 o 3 overs
0 for 16 o 6 overs 2 for 19 o 15 overs 0 for 28 o 9 overs 0 for 18 o 7 overs
The next morning saw rain and the chances of play looked poor. Both teams were posi ve though and the game started in wet underfoot condi ons at 12.30pm,
with 3 hours play possible. King’s declared overnight to get the match moving and
we went into our 2nd innings trying to set them a target to chase in their 2nd innings.
Hayden Hart with 31 runs was the only batsman to get going in damp condi ons with lots of elders around the bat. With our 1st innings lead we were able to set King’s a target of 119 in approximately 26 overs for the outright win.
King’s put on 47 runs for their 1st wicket and things were looking di cult for us at this stage. Slowly, but surely we started taking wickets and the match became ght, eventually coming down to the last over where King’s needed 11 runs and we
