Smallbore Team
The team came second to Menzies College in the Southland Secondary Schools’ Ri e Target Shoo ng Compe on. The be er team won that contest and looks to be
the one to beat over the next two to three years.
On re ec on, this year’s shoo ng development was hindered by the later than usual start to the Club season, compe on with other spor ng codes and ill health. In
a year where the boys should have been shoo ng personal bests, most did not.
Despite these setbacks and gear complica ons the boys s ll managed to compete and show moments of brilliance and represented our School with a great deal of pride.
Thank you once again to the signi cant support of both the Invercargill and Collegiate Clubs and their coaches given to the Team. Till next year, “keep your powder dry”.

SBHS 1ST XV RUGBY
Club Season
This year the 1st XV had an up and down season with some great wins and some narrow losses. We started the year full
of con dence that we could be er our 4th place nish in the Dunedin Premier Colts Grade from 2017. This started o posi vely, with a convincing win over last year’s runners up, Taieri. As the season progressed we played some very good footy and were very compe ve in all games.
While the Colts season was vitally important to do well in, our focus was developing our skill set and developing how we wanted to play as a team, winning all three inter-schools and making it back up to the Top 4 for the third me in a row. Our Colts season nished, seeing us in 5th posi on with 7 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw,
the team narrowly missing out on the semis by a points’ di eren al. A good result as in most cases we were playing lads 2/3 years older than us.
Interschools
SBHS Vs Otago Boys’ High School in Dunedin – (14 all draw)
Our rst interschool of the season
was against tradi onal foes up there at Li lebourne. Travelling up in mini vans with a bit of snow and sleet falling, the boys knew we were in for a tough contest on the tradi onally muddy eld of Li lebourne. The wet condi ons played a part and on a heavy eld, ght boring rugby was required. With the Hoops Army behind them, Otago Boys’ crashed over for the rst try, before Harry Taylor drove over from close range. First
half score 7-7. The second half started with hard fought, ght rugby being played, and with Sean Withy crashing over for Southland to take a 14-7 lead. A er many phases and some brave defence, Otago scored a nice
try to level the score. The match ended in
a tough fought, 14 all draw, with us feeling like we had missed a few opportuni es a er bene ng from majority of the possession. However, it was a fair result as both teams really bashed each other to bits. Hooker Jacob Payne put in a solid shi , carrying strong, along with Elliot Warrender.
SBHS Vs Waitaki Boys’ High School in Invercargill – (Win 22-8)
With the home crowd advantage and a stellar Southland day, we started posi vely with two quick tries, rstly to Morgan Riordan, who nished a well worked set piece move, and secondly, Elliot Warrender, crashing over under the horns to take
the early advantage. However, due to the frequent domina on of the ref’s whistle, we were unable to get any ow on. A further try to Sean Withy, who capitalised o a good lineout steal and a penalty to Jordan Maher, saw the nal score at 22-8 in favour of us. Stand out players in this match were Morgan Riordan, who threw well and was busy throughout, and locks, Harry Taylor and Aleki Saili, ge ng through a power of work.
SBHS Vs King’s High School in Invercargill – (Win 44-3)
King’s was our nal interschool of the year and one that the year 13s were keen to do well in, as it was our last one at home. That’s exactly what we did! On an average day
and a greasy eld, the boys put together a dominant performance, showing good skill and o oading ability in the wet condi ons, to run out 44-3 winners against a strong King’s side. Tries were shared about the team, with Jacob Payne picking up two. Also, strong performances from Sala Kuresa on the le wing and Tim Price in the halves, wrapped up another unbeaten interschool season.
Top 4 playo (Semi-Final)
SBHS Vs John McGlashan College
– (Win 46-5)
With only nals footy le , the boys were back into the mahi leading up to a home semi- nal against a strong John McGlashan
Zach Mir n, Callum O’Connor, Luke O’Connor (coxswain), Hayden Milne and Shaun Nimo received a Bronze medal at the South Island Rowing Championships, 2018.
