ba ng tough and batsmen had to ght for every run.
Shirley scored 153 in their rst innings with our bowling gures:
McKelvie picking up a century early on in the season. Another highlight in both years was travelling o site to take part in some classes run by various tness outlets.
The number of students who have made Southland representa ve teams is too large to men on, with 95% of students across both of classes achieving this.
Outstanding achievements in Year 10 include – Will Stodart being given an award for contribu on and par cipa on to sport at the Southland Secondary Sports awards. He also made the New Zealand top 20 U16 basketball squad along with Southland U16 rugby team, as a year 10 student. Aaron Withy also made the Southland U16 rugby team as a year 10 student, which is an impressive feat. Solomon Lewis was 4th at South Island Squash Champs and has been selected for New Zealand Emerging Squad for 2019. Jackson Herrick was rst at the South Island Swimming Champs in 400m individual medley, 200m individual medley and 200m bu er y.
Outstanding achievements in Year 9 include – Josh Evans being named Southland U14 rugby player of the year and Ngarimu Paraki named most promising player. Lewis Telfer picked up Southland U13 rugby player of the year. Also in rugby, Jack Churstain, Ngarimu and Caleb Williams made the Southland Boys’ High School U15 tournament team that played at the South Island Tournament. Jack Taplin had a very successful year in Taekwondo, winning the New Zealand and Australian championships for U16 and being named Junior Sports Person of the year at the Southland Secondary School sports awards.
I would just like to thank the various sports for giving up their me to work with the boys on their training and skills throughout the year.

Ba ng in our rst innings we struggled through to 137 runs, with Clark Sutherland 24, Benji Culhane 24, Ken Singleton 22, Hayden Hart 21 and Sean Withy 19, the best of the batsmen. Lots of starts, but nobody got the big score we needed
to build a decent lead. We went into
Shirley Boy’s second innings with real determina on and bowled them out for 109 runs, giving them a lead of 126 runs. Star of the show was Hayden Hart with gures of 6 for 23 o 21 overs. This was
a great spell and means that Hayden gets on the cricket Honours’ Board at school. Blair (2), Sean and Jed (1) also took wickets. Chasing the 126 to win was going to be tough on a wicket that was s ll playing tricks. At 53 for 6 the chase was not looking great. Shirley bowled extremely well and it took a great partnership from Benji Culhane (36) and Blake Harper (31) to get us close. Clark, Blair and Jed all did their bit at the end and it came down to Blair McKenzie hi ng a four straight down the ground o the second last ball to give us the win. A er feeling like we were behind the whole match, this was a brilliant e ort by a rela vely young side.
I believe there is a lot of character in the side and they will only get be er with
me. Sean Withy captained the side very well and looks to lead from the front. Well done to ‘Harty’ for ge ng on the Honours’ Board and all the boys for their ght and determina on. We look forward to our next inter-school with an experienced Kings’ side.

Junior Sports Academy
This year saw 28 boys enter the Academy in Year 9 and 26 in Year 10. There was a wide range of sports that the boys excelled in. Term one saw the Year 9s take part in goal se ng, athle cs and summer striking while the Year 10s completed a tness unit standard, to set them up for the winter sports. Term two saw the introduc on
of the students working on their own individual skills. We were lucky that the boys were able to get specialised coaching from the regional sport development o cers. The cricketers were lucky that they got to train over the o season using the indoor facility at Queens Park. The bene t of this is already being seen with S rling
Our team this year looked strong on
paper with only one new shooter and four experienced shooters returning to the fold. However, the successes of previous years were not to be repeated. The Team was:
Flynn Longman (Team Captain) Devin Wa s
Kyle Beck
Jakeb Lawson
Erik Cahill
There was only one occasion, the interschool against tradi onal rivals Otago Boys’ High School, where all of our team shot at or near their best to win by a good margin. We were soundly beaten by the na onally rated King’s High School Team and came a close second to Waitaki Boys’ (one of our shooters down due to illness).
