In wet conditions overhead and on a turf which, although unbroken, was waterlogged and soft, the S.B.H.S. 1st Hockey XI was beaten 6 goals to nil. But the play was not as one-sided as the score suggests.
Bronze Medallion: R. Stewart, P. White, R. Collins, J. Collie, K. Thompson, R. Hayes, G. Palmer, C. Pratt, B. Watson, M. Alexander, N. Pritchard, M. Hulls.
The rst half was begun with two players short, and the rest of the team had to shu le to ll gaps. After some unpro table attacks we went on defence. Four goals were scored against us, accounted for by the confusion left by having two backs missing.
K. Dawson, W. Hayes.
In the second half our two wanderers were allowed on and the reorganised team attacked vigorously until John Pritchard went o with cramp. Playing short, Southland attacked and defended well but two more goals were scored before the nish of play.
Outstanding players: John Pritchard, Chalmers and Kennedy who made many good left-wing attacks, and Carr who, without support of backs, made some good saves.
For the rst time in a number of years this game, played in warm weather on a fast eld, resulted in a win for the School team.
Play was rather scrappy at times, with an improve ment by S.B.H.S. at the end of each half. The backs were not always at their best, but Carr in goal made some good saves.
This club has a smaller roll, but the interest shown is good. Unfortunately we have not got the Baths for this period and can only practise land drill and re suscitation. A set of like-saving books have been pur chased, and the buying of a resuscitator is being nego tiated. The club is under the control of John Pritchard
The final result was: S.B.H.S. 3, Gore I.
Playing in the local competitions in the Second Grade along with the 1st XI's from the School, Tech., and Hargest, the team had a reasonable successful season. Inevitably many games were lost, but the experience gained was invaluable. The standard of play improved steadily throughout the season, so much so that the team registered a victory over Tech..
(President) and David Wicks (Secretary). Mr. Ruhen is the master in charge.
One inter-school match against Central Southland College was played at Winton and in an interesting game the School team won 4-0.
The boys of both clubs would like to thank the Rector for his support and the time o for the exams; and Mr. Ruhen and Mr. McClymont for their support, encouragement and coaching.

With the start of the new year we had good numbers (50-60), but later in the term the numbers dronoed (30-40). John Pritchard and David Wicks, with the help of Bryan Travers, have organised this group at the Baths with success. Also helping were Wesley Hayes, Bert Tre ers and Lindsay Smith. With the coming of the new baths in the School's grounds, more time available in the water should help improve the standard of work.
