Pansy
Thoughts, Faithfulness, Love
Pansy is derived from the word “pensée” which means “thought”
in French. For this reason it is the symbol of thoughts, love, and
faithfulness. This flower was also given to Laertes because Ophelia
wanted him to think through his rash actions, and—much like the
rosemary—reflect upon what has happened in order to act in a more
controlled manner. Unlike Hamlet, Laertes does not spend his days in
his thought. Perhaps Ophelia’s love for Hamlet was also represented by
the pansy, by telling her beloved brother to think as Hamlet does. In any
case, giving a pansy Laertes symbolizes the affection and care she has
for him.
Dalai Lama
A very well-known individual for the depth and profundity of his
thoughts, is Dalai Lama. His beliefs circulate around harmony, love,
self-discipline, thought, and preservation of peace. Unlike the impulsive
Laertes, Dalai Lama acts with deep meaning and considers the
perspectives of many others. Because of his ability to think of others, he
has won the Nobel Peace Prize, and many other awards. I would give a
pansy to Dalai Lama, not to remind him of his thoughts—like Ophelia
did to Laertes—but because he is the very symbol of love and profound
thought.
