Louisville: A Great Place to Live
And a great place to buy a house! We ask people all the time what they like about
living in Kentucky’s largest city; 29th largest city in the country. We are told:
It’s a big small world. Louisville has the makings of a big city. We have well-known restaurants like Morton’s
Steakhouse, Hard Rock Café, P.F.Changs, and The Cheesecake Factory, and we have big name shops like Macy’s,
Von Maur, Apple, Sephora, and Anthropologie. Yet, we also have a small city atmosphere. Practically everywhere
you go – movies, a festival, or a ballgame – you see somebody you know. And every time you meet a new person,
you’re almost guaranteed to know someone in common. In a city of 760,000 people, you might wonder how this
is possible. I think the key is the interest we all take in each other’s lives. Louisville is not one of those places
where if you are born in a certain neighborhood then you never go outside those streets. In Louisville, people
from all neighborhoods go to the Greek Fest at the Waterfront, the Oktoberfest downtown, the State Fair at the
fairgrounds, the Derby Festival Parade and our Thunder Over Louisville fireworks event on the river. You’ll meet
people from the East End, South End, and West End all partying together at Fourth Street Live, Baxter Avenue
pubs, or concerts downtown. And, people will strike up conversations with you in line at the gas station – not to
be nosy but just to be friendly. That’s just how we do it here!
We have outstanding schools. Louisville has wonderful public schools with traditional and magnet
programs. There is an abundance of private, parochial grade schools, and high schools, many of which have been
recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. And, we have notable colleges such as Bellarmine University,
University of Louisville, and Spalding University.
There is so much to do. Louisville Zoo is one of the best in the world. The Louisville Ballet is amazing, as
is the Louisville Orchestra and the Kentucky Opera. Season tickets to the Broadway musicals are affordable and
well worth it! Because Louisville is centrally located in the country, we host conventions for many industries,
which keeps downtown nightclubs thriving at night.
Basketball county! There is no better place than Louisville during the NCAA basketball season. Whether
you’re a University of Louisville Cardinal fan, a University of Kentucky Wildcat fan, or Indiana University Hoosier
fan, we celebrate them all emphatically. Many bars, restaurants, and stores offer special sales during a game, and
it is not uncommon to see a car drive around with team window flags, or multiple university logos displayed on
bumper stickers.
The music scene! Live music is always playing somewhere! See what’s playing at pubs in St. Matthews, The
Louisville Palace, along Baxter Avenue or Bardstown Road, Headliners, Waterfront Park, and the Yum! center!
