            12. Sports and Civils join hands in a number ◊ Below Free State Stadium
of stadiums and other amenities in the Free State. At ◊ Bottom: Phakisa Raceway
Welkom the Phakisa raceway was built in 1999 to
improve the economic activity in the area where the Free
State Goldfields were slowly reducing their production.
It accommodates 60 000 spectators and is said to be a
place for fast cars, super bikes and glamorous girls and
features a 4.24 km long track. According to experts, it
is comparable to the Las Vegas Speedway in the USA.
For a small fee the general public can also use the
raceway on certain days. Just before it was opened in
1999, Rodney Milford who was SAICE president at the
time was allowed to test the track in his Volvo – they
            survived the test.

The free State Stadium seats approximately 40 000
spectators and is home to the Cheetas and serves as a
venue for both rugby and soccer. It was in fact a venue
for the 1995 Rugby World Cup as well as for the 2010
            FIFA World Cup South Africa.
