            22. Midrand Conical Tower Water Reservoir.
It is a uniquely shaped reinforced concrete structure. It
retains 6.5 Ml and is 47 m high from ground level. The
design envisaged a restaurant at the top but this has
not materialised. It is visible from a great distance since
its position is at the highest elevation in Midrand at 1 620
            m above sea level.

            hospital (previously Johannesburg General Hospital).
In general, hospital structures are complex in the sense
they have to provide for so many different services
and facilities. This has been dealt with by service floors
sandwiched in between each floor that functions as
wards, offices and theatres. The hospital dominates the
skyline on top of the Witwatersrand ridge. It is a 16-
level facility and the building is approximately 450 m
            long.

            24. Chris hani Baragwanath hospital is the
biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere with over
3 000 beds and 7 000 staff members and is situated in
Soweto – the sprawling residential areas which were
built after 1948. The hospital also serves about 2 000
outpatients a day. Soweto is an acronym for South
Western Townships and in itself a vast city which was
built, at least at the time, outside the Johannesburg
borders by the then nationalist government to
promote its vision of housing people of different races
            separately.
