            12. Gold Mines in Gauteng are reportedly among
the deepest mines in the world and the current record
holder is TauTona Mine or Western Deep No.3 Shaft at
some 3.9 km deep. The civil engineering structures at
these mines are mainly visible in the form of the head
gear structures which house the machines and cable
wheels that operate the skips or lifts for personnel as
well as ore. There are some steel structures around as
well and many other structures are nowadays mostly
constructed with reinforced concrete. Although gold is
a diminishing activity in South Africa, mainly due to the
gold bearing reefs that are dipping deeper towards the
south, and current technology is not advanced enough
yet to mine even deeper. Gold still contributes to about
            18% of South Africa’s GDP.

old slimes dams. The mine dumps as these are known
to still contain enough gold to make it worthwhile to re-
mine. At the same time the land on which these dumps
are situated is quite valuable owing to the fact that the
City of Johannesburg now completely surrounds these
dumps. The maintenance of the dumps also became
a major burden and in some cases mining companies
are not in existence and the sand blowing from these
