39. Pedestrian Bridge over the N1 highway
at Hammanskraal. The clients for this bridge are the
Tshwane Metro, the Metsweding Metro and the South
African National Roads Agency (Sanral). The walkway
is a curved thin concrete slab section with a concrete
handrail. At the time, it was the first to use a heavy
walled steel piping external corkscrew configuration
for support symbolising linear movement along the
axis. In the words of the CEO of SANRAL, Eng Nazir
Alli, civil engineering structures and design along the
freeways should be aesthetically pleasing in addition to
its functionality – this bridge certainly conforms to that
principle.
