 GUIDE FOR SWISS
FINANCIAL INTERMEDIARIES 2018
Overview of payments and services provided by banks and the supplier industry for external asset managers.
Authors: Philippe Oster and Prof. Dr. Dominik Erny
The second edition of The Institute of Financial Ser- vices Zug IFZ of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Economy presents the latest trends in the services of Financial Intermediaries (FIM) desks of banks in Switzerland as well as in the local supply industry. 26 banks (2017: 22) and 51 sup- pliers (2017: 33) took part. For the first time, MiFID II-related offerings at banks and suppliers were also collected, among other things, in the field of report- ing, best execution and MiFID II compliance access to research.
Offering of banks in Switzerland and Liechtenstein
25 of the 26 participating banks disclosed their payments and services to external asset managers using a struc- tured questionnaire. The banks provided both qualitative
and quantitative information on criteria for cooperation with external asset managers domiciled in Switzerland. The country coverage for the first quarter of 2018 was also disclosed by the majority of specialized desks.
In addition, the banks have provided information on tool- based access along the value chain. Surveys on reim- bursement possibilities, access to investment research and data interfaces to third parties were conducted once again.
Furthermore, information on private label investment fund and certificate solutions, further education offers as well as active support in the transfer of business can be found in the Asset Manager Guide 2018.
On a global level, 2018 services can be offered to cus- tomers from 129 countries (2017: 122). On average, the desks cover 46 countries (big banks 81, cantonal banks 5, other banks 54). While the coverage rate at the global level remains stable at just over 37%, the coverage rate for EU countries has fallen noticeably from 65.8% to 57.3%.
Reimbursements in the form of finder fees, transaction-re- lated reimbursements, or portfolio maintenance commis- sions are still possible at the majority of banks. 92% of banks currently maintain interfaces with third parties and send electronic documents. Further details, for example, on the offering of banks and the supply industry with re- gard to the EU MiFID II directive, are also included in the Asset Manager Guide 2018.
Overall, a comprehensive offering is provided by the Swiss financial centre to external asset managers.
