Page 17 - Poetic Journey For America's Veterans
P. 17

At the Doctor's office We sat alone that day The day I got that Testimony from Jay
Boots and a lumberjack
Coat Jay had on
And a prompting thought said Speak and don't wait too long
I started by saying
Dr. Smith helped me so With pain I had from an Accident years ago
Jay said he helped me too in a voice low and calm With a wounded leg
I got in Vietnam
A secret mission it
Was supposed to be But the word leaked out To the enemy
When we bailed out Flares lit up the night sky One hit my parachute And I began to dive
My leg was crushed bad They meant to amputate But I said no, it was
My leg and my fate
The poet in me had to Ask him that day
What were you in and He said the Green Beret
I wrote this poem for him Lord it came so fast
For it meant so much to me When he shared his past
He got it and called once And said thank you Sam I thanked him:
And we never met again
