Supporting Student Notes:

 • URL Filtering is the foundation of acceptable use control. Cisco offers a very large data base that delivers the
ability to do real-time dynamic content analysis/categorization on the fly.

 • But the problem is shifting for organizations that are looking to embrace web 2.0 applications, for any purpose. For
this type of control, you need Application Visibility and Control, or AVC.

 • Let’s take Facebook. Ten years ago, everyone blocked Facebook. Today, every company has a Facebook page, or
they want to embrace Facebook for the next generation employee, branding or to reach out to their constituents
    or consumers.

 • The fear is that by enabling web 2.0 applications like Facebook, you are opening up Pandora’s box to productivity
    loss.

 • Application Visibility and Control provides granular control over these applications. To use our previous example, it
allows you to block out aspects of Facebook, like Facebook games, messaging or chat. You can even create a policy
so employees can’t hit the “Like” button.

 • But Facebook is just one example. We identify hundreds of web 2.0 applications and 150,000 micro-applications.
These micro-applications are bucketed into easy-to-use categories so administrators can easily allow/ deny access
to the relevant parts of the application.
