In repositioning themselves and IT to support enterprise innovation and growth, CIOs must recognize two issues
standing in their way: benefits realization (the achievement of business benefits) and IT skills. Unless addressed, both
issues will prevent IT from reaching its full potential.
As they reimagine IT, CIOs can use their organizations as strategic catalysts. To achieve business results, they must
draw on different sources of power and influence (see figure below), a capability that will become increasingly
important as IT integrates with the enterprise. Already, there is no such thing as a pure IT project. Whether
investments are more IT-intensive or less so, they are all business projects.
