 116 JAGGEDEDGE
The entire group recited the chant again in unison three times. Each contestant knew that course completion was a stroll to the safety bunker to listen for the explosion and eagerly awaited the instructor’s last command.
“Kneel in front of your project and initiate.”
Mark grabbed the fuse lighter and pulled.
Boom! The explosion thundered.
In the small unit leaders course, Seige and Brock had just
finished classes for the day.
“Okay, Seige, level with me. What’s wrong. I have never seen
you like this,” Brock pressed.
“I need to make some calls,” Seige acknowledged, “because
the more I think about where we are, the why doesn’t make any sense. I just can’t shake the idea that something was at the last mark we hit. And being in school right at this moment bothers me. It’s just not a logical progression from being as close as were.”
“That’s not the only thing worrying you,” Brock added em- phatically.
“What do you mean?”
“As the middleman, you’re wondering where the leak is. We all know our last job went sour because of a leak. And even though we pretty much trust each other, we’re all curious about the powers that be. Stop me anytime. But if the director isn’t the problem, we sure as hell would like to know where it is.”
Seige turned from his side to look directly at Brock.
“Let me tell you something, boss we were all part of that last caper, and none of us are stupid. You think those same thoughts hadn’t occurred to us?”
At that moment Seige received a page.
“Oh, oh.” It looks like somebody is having an emergency. Hold on. Let me answer this.”
Seige ran the few steps to the pay phone and dialed the num- ber receiving a new page before he said hello.
“Seige!” Rick screamed. “Mark is dead!”
